A short (5:47), but very interesting TED talk on Sound and the way it affects us.
Sound affects us in four ways:
- Physiologically: Sounds affect your hormone secretions, breathing, heart rate, and brain waves.
- Psychologically: Music is the most powerful form of sound that affects our emotional state.
- Cognitively: Our brains have a small bandwidth for processing auditory input. If we have to process too much auditory input, we become less productive.
- Behaviorally: We tend to move away from unpleasant sound and toward pleasant sound.
Among other suggestions, Julian Treasure recommends at least 5 minutes of bird song a day for our good health. I wonder how many minutes of ukulele he might recommend?
