TED Talks: Four Ways Sound Affects Us

tedA short (5:47), but very interesting TED talk on Sound and the way it affects us.
Sound affects us in four ways:

  • Physiologically: Sounds affect your hormone secretions, breathing, heart rate, and brain waves.
  • Psychologically: Music is the most powerful form of sound that affects our emotional state.
  • Cognitively: Our brains have a small bandwidth for processing auditory input. If we have to process too much auditory input, we become less productive.
  • Behaviorally: We tend to move away from unpleasant sound and toward pleasant sound.

Among other suggestions, Julian Treasure recommends at least 5 minutes of bird song a day for our good health. I wonder how many minutes of ukulele he might recommend?

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! If you’re interested in reading more about the psychology of music I can highly recommend the very readable book ‘This is Your Brain on Music’ by Daniel J. Levitin
